Mental Blockers That Hold High-Achievers Back: The Silent Struggles Leaders Face
What mental and emotional blockers in leadership are holding you back from stepping into your fullest potential as a leader? This is a question I ask my clients, my audiences, and even myself. No matter how much you accomplish, personal and career growth always uncovers new internal challenges to navigate.
What mental and emotional blockers in leadership are holding you back from stepping into your fullest potential as a leader?
This is a question I ask my clients, my audiences, and even myself. No matter how much you accomplish, personal and career growth always uncovers new internal challenges to navigate.
High achievers are often so focused on results, responsibilities, and reputation that it’s easy to overlook the internal patterns that quietly hold us back. In my work with executives, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders, I consistently see these same mental and emotional blockers in leadership resurface.
Let’s shine a light on these silent struggles, because naming them is the first step toward releasing them.
1. Lack of Executive Presence
Executive presence is one of those intangible qualities everyone talks about, yet few can truly define. And yet, it makes a measurable difference. Studies show that 26 percent of what it takes to get promoted is directly linked to your executive presence and influence.
That presence is what I call the IT Factor™: a magnetic blend of self-confidence, clarity, and authenticity that draws people in and builds trust. It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about how you carry yourself, how you communicate, and how you influence others through presence, not pressure. The best part is, executive presence and influence are not something you either have or don’t. It’s something you can cultivate. And it starts with self-awareness and intentionality.
2. Confidence Dips
Confidence isn’t a one-time achievement. It’s a daily practice, built over time.
Even the most accomplished professionals experience moments when self-doubt creeps in. Maybe you’ve stepped into a new role, been asked to speak in front of a room full of stakeholders, or faced a bold new challenge. Confidence can dip, especially under pressure. But you’re never stuck there.
Like any skill, self-confidence can be built and strengthened over time. With the right tools, mindset shifts, and support, you can grow your self-confidence, one day at a time.
If this resonates, I invite you to explore my blog on How to Master Presence and Confidence in High-Stakes Moments, where I share more strategies to build your self-confidence from the inside out.
3. Limiting Beliefs & Imposter Syndrome
Believe it or not, we all have similar doubts racing through our minds, even high-profile, seasoned executives. It’s normal to experience imposter syndrome and feel as though we are limiting ourselves, no matter where we are in our career or self-development journey.
“I’m not ready yet.”
“I don’t belong in this room.”
“I feel like a fraud.”
These thoughts often lie beneath the surface, quietly influencing how we present ourselves, what we pursue, and how we lead. Whether it’s imposter syndrome or deep-rooted limiting beliefs, they share a common thread: they convince us to shrink instead of stretch. These internal narratives are rarely based on truth. They’re stories are shaped by early experiences, cultural messages, or past failures. But here’s the empowering truth: stories can be rewritten.
It starts with awareness, recognizing the difference between fact and fear. Then comes the choice to act not out of insecurity, but out of courage. That doesn’t mean the doubts go away completely. But it means you no longer let them dictate your potential. You get to decide whether you lead from the voice of fear or the voice of truth. You’ve earned your place. The challenge now is to believe it and lead from it.
4. Clinging to What Used to Work
One of the hardest truths I have learned, and helped others embrace, is that what got you to where you are in your career today may not get you to where you want to be tomorrow.
It’s easy to stay comfortable with old habits and strategies that once worked. Growth, however, requires us to evolve and expand. That’s why personal and professional transformation calls for a willingness to stretch, to experiment, and to get uncomfortable. It asks us to unlearn and take risks. That’s where personal and professional transformation begins.
Staying comfortable with the familiar may seem safe, but it can quietly keep you stuck. If you feel this way, ask yourself: What am I resisting that could actually help me grow? Am I holding on to something that no longer serves where I want to be?
5. Lack of Preparation
This one might sound simple, but it’s one of the most overlooked blockers I see in high-achieving professionals.
Too often, leaders walk into high-stakes conversations, boardrooms, or important presentations thinking, “I know this stuff, I’ll just wing it.” But that’s not all there is to it.
Presence is a skill. Communication is a skill. Influence is a skill.
And just like any other high-performance skill—like playing an instrument or running a marathon—mastery comes from practice, not chance. Preparation isn’t just about memorizing bullet points or rehearsing slides. It’s about aligning your message with your mission. It’s about clarifying your intention before you ever speak a word and managing your energy, not just your information.
When you prepare intentionally, you show up with clarity, self-confidence, and control. You speak with conviction because you know what matters most and how to communicate it. That’s what builds presence and trust. And that’s what elevates your executive leadership where it’s needed most.
Final Thought: You’re Not Alone, and You’re Not Broken
These mental and emotional blockers in leadership are common, and they don’t mean that you’re unqualified. They don’t mean you’re behind. And they certainly don’t mean you’re broken. They simply mean you’re human.
Every leader I’ve coached has encountered these struggles at some point. The difference between those who stay stuck and those who grow lies in intention, awareness, and support. When you begin to recognize your own blockers with compassion rather than judgment, you reclaim your power to shift them. And from that place, you can step into your next chapter of your leadership journey with more presence, more purpose, and more authenticity than ever before.
You don’t have to do it alone. But you do have to decide that you’re worth the investment. And trust me, you are.

The Hidden Cost of Not Choosing Yourself: Why Transformation Starts with One Brave Decision
Have you ever paused to consider that sometimes, the biggest barrier to your next chapter of your leadership journey is simply you? In my experience, personal and professional transformation doesn’t usually begin with a grand gesture.
Have you ever paused to consider that sometimes, the biggest barrier to your next chapter of your leadership journey is simply you? In my experience, personal and professional transformation doesn’t usually begin with a grand gesture.
More often, it begins with a gentle inner voice that whispers:
“This isn’t working.”
“You were made for more.”
“It’s time to choose yourself.”
Here’s the challenge: as successful professionals and high-achieving leaders, we’re often taught to keep performing, to push through, and to put others’ needs before our own. We quiet those inner nudges, rationalize our discomfort, and stay in roles or routines that no longer serve us, simply because it feels safer than stepping into the unknown.
But what we often overlook is the hidden cost of ignoring our own needs and desires. It’s not just about staying where we are; it’s about what we forfeit by not taking the chance: our potential, our peace, our fulfillment.
The cost of not choosing ourselves is often greater than we realize.
My Brave Decision
One of the hardest, scariest choices I’ve ever made was leaving behind a 28-plus year career in television news. That career gave me visibility, credibility, and a platform I had spent years building. Becoming an entrepreneur was never part of my plan. For a long time, I resisted it, convinced I wasn’t “business-minded” or smart enough to succeed on my own.
Then, a mentor reminded me that my reputation and credibility were valuable. Why give that value away to someone else? At that moment, something shifted. The fear and self-doubt I had carried for so long gave way to clarity. I realized I didn’t have to know everything; I just had to begin. Right there in his office, I chose to launch my own business.
Did I know what I was doing? Not at all. Was I scared? Absolutely. But I said yes to myself anyway.
That first brave yes set everything in motion. One step led to the next, building momentum. Momentum became mastery, and mastery brought deeper meaning to my work and my life.
That is the true power of choosing yourself. And now, I want to help you discover how you can choose yourself, too.
The First Step Doesn’t Have to Be Loud
You don’t need a five-year plan or to overhaul your entire life overnight. What you need is one intentional, courageous action. A quiet yet powerful move that says, “I’m not waiting anymore.”
This can look different for everyone, such as:
Saying no to something that drains you.
Saying yes to a conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Asking for help, support, or mentorship.
Finally committing to the goal you keep putting on the back burner—whether that’s writing the book, applying for the promotion, or starting the class.
Trusting your gut when it says this isn’t aligned anymore, even if no one else understands.
These decisions might not come with applause or affirmation. But they matter deeply because they’re yours. Each one is a declaration of self-trust. A sign that you’re willing to honor your truth, even in quiet moments. And this first step can lead to the moment that changes everything.
What Happens When You Do
The moment you give yourself permission to choose you, everything begins to shift.
Not because the world suddenly opens doors, but because you finally stop waiting for permission and start opening them for yourself.
You stop shrinking to fit environments that no longer suit you, even if they once felt like home.
You start reaching for possibilities that once felt too far out of reach, or maybe even too “selfish” to pursue.
You begin showing up not out of obligation or fear of letting others down, but from a place of purpose, clarity, and self-trust.
Over time, these brave decisions add up. Every yes to yourself becomes a building block in the foundation of a life that reflects who you truly are, not just who the world expects you to be.
You build resilience that allows you to grow rather than just survive, and self-confidence to lead and live authentically rather than just perform. These are the building blocks of a life of integrity that’s not just impressive on paper, but deeply fulfilling in practice.
That’s what the IT Factor™ is all about. It’s not an elusive quality reserved for a select few. It’s Intentional Transformation, grounded in authenticity, clarity, and courage. And it’s available to you, starting now.
What’s the Brave Decision You’re Avoiding?
If you’re feeling stuck right now, I invite you to pause and go inward.
Clarity doesn’t always come from doing more. Often, it comes from asking yourself the right questions about what you may be putting off:
What am I afraid to admit isn’t working?
What story am I telling myself about why I can’t change?
What’s one small step I can take today to choose myself?
Transformation doesn’t begin when everything is perfect. It begins when you stop waiting for the perfect moment and choose to show up with courage. You don’t have to leap all the way into the unknown today. But you do have to take the first step. Your next chapter of your leadership journey is waiting for you.
And it begins with one brave decision, one that says:
“This time, I choose me.”
And I’m cheering you on.

The Power of Group Executive Communication Workshops: Accelerating Culture from the Inside Out
What would change if your entire executive team communicated with greater clarity, courage, and presence?
It’s a question I often ask senior leaders. Because the truth is, organizational transformation doesn’t start with policies or processes. It starts with people.
What would change if your entire executive team communicated with greater clarity, courage, and presence?
It’s a question I often ask senior leaders. Because the truth is, organizational transformation doesn’t start with policies or processes. It starts with people. And the way people communicate—how they listen, speak, and connect—determines whether change takes root with energy and alignment, or stalls in confusion and resistance.
In today’s high-stakes business environment, communication is not a “soft skill.” It’s a core leadership capability. And when leadership teams invest in strengthening that capability together, the result isn’t incremental. It’s exponential.
Why Group Executive Communication Workshops Work
For years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching leaders one-on-one, helping them discover and amplify their authentic presence—their unique “It Factor” that builds trust and inspires action. But when I step into the room with an entire executive team, something even more powerful happens. The transformation accelerates. Why? Because communication is relational. It’s not just about what’s said—it’s about how it’s received, interpreted, and acted upon.
In group workshops, leaders have the opportunity to:
Build a shared language around feedback, influence, and leadership presence
Witness each other’s growth in real time, deepening respect and accountability
Challenge outdated norms and open space for more inclusive, collaborative dynamics
Practice courageous conversations in a safe, guided setting
And when those elements come together, the culture doesn’t just shift gradually—it begins to shift in the room.
From Insight to Impact
I’ll never forget a recent moment when an executive turned to me during a workshop and said: “We’ve never had a conversation like this as a team before.”
That’s the power of intentional communication. It creates inflection points. Once leaders experience what’s possible, they can’t go back—they can only move forward.
Think of it like a tuning fork. One leader finding their authentic voice can resonate deeply. But when an entire team is aligned, the whole organization feels the impact. That’s when the culture truly begins to sing.
Is Your Team Ready?
Ask yourself:
Are your leaders listening with curiosity—seeking to understand, not just respond?
Are difficult conversations being avoided, delayed, or derailed?
Is your team aligned in how it shows up—both internally and externally?
If any of these questions gave you pause, it may be time to bring your leadership team into the room together.
My Group Workshops are designed to create the space for honest dialogue, deeper connection, and intentional growth. Whether you’re navigating cultural change, scaling at speed, or striving to lead with greater impact, these workshops provide both the structure and the spark to move forward with clarity and confidence. Because when leaders communicate with purpose and presence, culture follows.
Let’s Elevate Together
If you’re curious about how group communication workshops can support your team, let’s connect. This isn’t about checking a box. It’s about raising the bar for how your leaders show up—and what your culture can become. As always, stay curious.

Beyond Burnout: How to Rebuild Resilience When You’re Tired of Being Strong
Are you tired of being resilient, exhausted from the pressure of holding it all together? In today’s culture of constant hustle and high performance, we often glorify resilience, but rarely talk about what happens when even resilience starts to wear thin.
Are you tired of being resilient, exhausted from the pressure of holding it all together? In today’s culture of constant hustle and high performance, we often glorify resilience, but rarely talk about what happens when even resilience starts to wear thin. In recent months, many clients have confidentially shared with me that they feel overwhelmed, yet guilty for admitting they’re tired of always being the strong one.
If this is you, you feel emotionally depleted, mentally foggy, or like you’re “done being strong,” you’re not alone. This state has a name: resilience fatigue. And it’s quietly affecting high-performing professionals across every industry.
According to the American Psychological Association:
nearly 3 in 5 employees report feeling emotionally exhausted,
44% of workers say they’re experiencing burnout.
Even more revealing: only 35% of professionals say they feel “mentally well” at work (Gartner, 2023).
So what’s really happening? It’s not a lack of grit. It’s the weight of prolonged pressure with too few opportunities to recover. And it is important to find ways to recover, to take time off for you.
What Is Resilience Fatigue—Really?
Resilience fatigue happens when we’ve spent so long “powering through” stress or hardship that our emotional reserves run low. You might notice:
Increased irritability or emotional sensitivity
Trouble concentrating or sleeping
A sense of numbness or detachment
The desire to withdraw or shut down
It’s not failure, it’s feedback. It’s your body and mind’s way of saying: I need care too.
The New Model of Resilience: Grace + Grit
We often think of resilience as toughness. But the reality is that sustainable resilience is equal parts grit and grace—the ability to bounce back and the wisdom to rest, reflect, and realign.
Here are four evidence-based strategies to help you rebuild your resilience from the inside out:
1. Embrace Restorative Self-Compassion
Research by Dr. Kristin Neff shows that practicing self-compassion reduces anxiety, boosts motivation, and improves resilience. When you're tired of “holding it all together,”, remind yourself:
“It’s okay to pause. It’s okay to not have it all together. I’m doing the best I can.”
Action Step: Start your day with one compassionate affirmation or question: “What do I need today to feel supported?”
2. Replenish Your Emotional Reserves
Think of your resilience like a bank account. You can’t keep making withdrawals without deposits. This is where a personal coping toolbox comes in. Include:
Movement (walks, stretching, dance)
Mindful rituals (journaling, meditation)
Emotional outlets (talking to a friend, creative hobbies)
Nutrition + sleep as non-negotiables
Action Step: List your top 5 positive coping strategies. Post them where you’ll see them when overwhelm hits.
3. Set Strategic Boundaries
Many of us fall into the “helper” trap—saying yes when we’re running on empty, or when we really want to say no! But boundaries aren’t barriers, they’re bridges to sustainable leadership.
Research shows that professionals who set boundaries are less likely to experience chronic burnout and more likely to feel a sense of control and fulfillment (Harvard Business Review, 2023).
Action Step: Say “no” to one non-essential task this week. Notice how it feels. Use that clarity to recalibrate.
4. Practice Micro-Restoration Daily
You don’t need a weeklong retreat to recover. Even micro-rest moments (as short as 60 seconds) can regulate your nervous system and restore clarity.
Try:
60 seconds of deep breathing
Standing outside and noticing 3 things you see or hear
A moment of silence before your next meeting
Action Step: Set a phone alarm labeled “Pause for presence” 2–3x a day this week. Try it and adjust as needed.
The Bottom Line: You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Resilience isn’t a solo act. It’s a practice—and sometimes, we need support to rebuild.
“The goal of living is to absorb all of the pain of life and lose none of the joy.” — my Mom
If you’re navigating tough times, remember: you can rise and rest. Strength and softness can coexist. Growth doesn’t require perfection—only intention.

Why the Hardest Moments Unlock the Greatest Growth
Most of us are wired to avoid discomfort. We associate it with instability, fear, or even failure. But what if discomfort is exactly where your next level of leadership lives?
Most of us are wired to avoid discomfort. We associate it with instability, fear, or even failure. But what if discomfort is exactly where your next level of leadership lives?
I coach high-achieving professionals, C-suite leaders, and teams to lead with confidence, presence, and authenticity. And if there’s one universal truth I’ve seen: growth doesn’t happen when things feel easy—it happens when you choose to lean in, especially when it’s hard.
Discomfort Is a Signal—Not a Stop Sign
When something feels hard—stepping into a bigger role, navigating a reinvention, or initiating a tough conversation—it’s not a cue to stop. It’s a cue to start.
✅ 45% of professionals say fear of failure holds them back from taking the next big step in their careers. (LinkedIn x Glint Workplace Confidence Report, 2022)
Discomfort is feedback. It’s insight. It’s a message that growth wants to happen.
Instead of asking: “Why is this so hard?”
Try asking: “What is this moment here to teach me?”
This mindset shift transforms resistance into opportunity. Growth is meant to be uncomfortable—because it requires evolution. But discomfort isn’t the enemy. It's evidence that something new is trying to emerge.
Resistance Reveals Where Courage Lives
I often say: resistance reveals where your courage is waiting to grow. Fear of failure. Fear of being seen. Fear of letting go of the familiar. All of these reveal the edge of your current identity. And that edge? That’s your growth zone. It’s the only place intentional transformation happens. You can’t evolve without it.
✅ 61% of employees say they’ve made a positive change at work as a result of discomfort or failure. (BetterUp Workplace Mental Health Trends Report)
Your IT Factor Is Built in the Quiet Moments
Your IT Factor—that magnetic blend of confidence, presence, authenticity, and influence—isn’t built when things are perfect. It’s built:
When you show up before you feel ready
When you practice even when no one is watching
When you lead without a script
When you speak up—even with a shaky voice
The IT Factor doesn’t just “appear.” It’s developed through consistent, courageous decisions—especially when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
4 Steps to Turn Discomfort Into Growth
1. Name the Resistance. Ask yourself: Where am I feeling the most friction right now? Is it a difficult conversation, a new role, or a personal challenge you’ve been avoiding? Naming it is the first step to reframing it.
2. Reframe the Story. Replace thoughts like “This is too hard” with “This is growing me.” Discomfort is a signal—not a sign to stop. Shifting the narrative rewires your mindset for forward movement.
3. Take One Brave Action. Progress doesn’t require a full leap—it starts with a single, courageous step. Speak up in a meeting. Ask for feedback. Set a boundary. Each small move builds momentum.
4. Reflect to Reinforce. Growth is amplified when it’s acknowledged. Journal or voice-note your insights: What did I learn from that uncomfortable moment? How did I grow? This reinforces confidence and helps you lead more intentionally.
Transformation Begins on the Inside
Whether you’re navigating change, leading a team, or reinventing your career—transformation starts with a single choice: To be brave enough to grow—right where you are.
Because discomfort isn’t a barrier. It’s a breakthrough waiting to happen.

Using Summer as Your Soft Launch: How Rest, Reflection & Realignment Can Fuel Leadership Growth
Summer doesn’t have to be a complete slowdown. It can also be your soft launch—a quieter season to grow behind the scenes.
Summer tends to signal rest and renewal—and I’m all for it. Especially in our always-on world, pausing is not indulgent. It’s essential.
But summer doesn’t have to be a complete slowdown. It can also be your soft launch—a quieter season to grow behind the scenes. A space to ask deeper questions. To build strength without the spotlight. And to step into the next version of your leadership with more presence, confidence, and clarity.
Summer as a Soft Launch
With fewer meetings and lighter calendars, there’s built-in breathing room. Summer often lacks the full-court pressure of performance, making it an ideal time for intentional transformation. This isn’t about hustle—it’s about alignment. It’s the perfect season to try, to stretch, and to strengthen the muscles that matter most in your leadership journey.
Here’s why summer is a hidden opportunity for growth:
1. Growth and Recovery Can Coexist
Intentional transformation is a balance of action and alignment. Summer allows you to integrate both. Without the urgency of year-end targets or high-stakes presentations, you have space to experiment, implement new habits, and reflect on what’s working. That’s how change becomes sustainable.
Ask yourself:
Where in my life am I confusing motion with progress?
What small action this season could support long-term alignment?
Which current habit is no longer serving who I want to become?
2. Presence Can Be Quiet and Still
Let nature be your leadership coach. Whether you're walking a beach or hiking a trail, being outdoors naturally slows the nervous system and increases mindfulness. It reconnects you with the power of presence—a quiet, grounded kind of influence that every great leader possesses. Nature reminds us: growth doesn't have to be rushed to be real.
Ask yourself:
When was the last time I felt fully present? What contributed to that moment?
How does my current pace support—or diminish—my ability to be present?
What daily practice can help me slow down and deepen my awareness?
3. Confidence Grows in Clarity, Not Chaos
Confidence doesn’t thrive in overwhelm—it grows in quiet clarity. The slower rhythm of summer makes it easier to hear your own voice, trust your instincts, and tune in to what really matters. When you start leading from that place, your confidence becomes unshakable because it’s rooted in who you are, not what you achieve.
Ask yourself:
What noise can I eliminate to hear my inner voice more clearly?
What am I confident about right now? Where is my confidence wavering?
What would leading with grounded clarity (instead of performance) look like for me?
4. Reconnect with Yourself to Reconnect with Your Vision
High-performing leaders often forget this truth: you are not just what you do. You are who you are. Stepping back from constant productivity helps you reconnect with your values and your long-term vision.
Ask yourself:
How do I want to feel each day?
Am I thriving or simply surviving?
Am I living in alignment with my values?
What would my next bold chapter look like?
The answers to these questions lay the groundwork for meaningful change.
5. Build Momentum—Without the Burnout
Use this season to invest in yourself: take a workshop, work with a coach, or read books that challenge and energize you. Let rest and reflection coexist with preparation and curiosity. Slow, steady growth often leads to the most powerful transformation.
Ask yourself:
What investment (time, energy, focus) will help me grow next season?
What boundary do I need to hold in order to avoid burnout?
What “next level” skill do I want to build before the fall?
This Is What Intentional Transformation Looks Like
It may feel counterintuitive, but growth often begins in stillness. Transformation doesn’t only happen in the spotlight—it begins in the quiet spaces where you reflect, realign, and rise.
So this summer:
☀️ Take the vacation.
☀️ Sleep in.
☀️ Walk outside.
☀️ Reflect deeply.
☀️ Reconnect with what really matters.
☀️ And don’t forget to rise.
Want support in making this your season of intentional transformation? Let’s talk about keynotes, executive coaching, and tools to help you lead from the inside out.

Leading from the Inside Out: How Self-Awareness Transforms Teams
Before you can lead others, you must learn to lead yourself, and that begins with self-awareness.
Before you can lead others, you must learn to lead yourself, and that begins with self-awareness.
In today’s evolving business landscape, self-awareness is not just a soft skill—it’s a strategic advantage. For C-suite executives and senior leaders, understanding your inner world—your strengths, blind spots, emotional triggers, and communication tendencies—is the foundation for how you show up in every professional relationship, and how you lead from the inside out. It has a measurable impact on performance, trust, and team culture.
Why EQ is the New Executive IQ
While many leaders rely on intelligence or experience to guide their decisions, research shows that IQ accounts for only 10–25% of success. The rest? It comes down to your EQ—your emotional intelligence. EQ is what helps leaders inspire, influence, and innovate from a place of clarity, connection, and confidence.
Self-awareness is the foundation for developing your EQ. It’s what fuels intentional transformation, leading to your “IT Factor”—the conscious alignment of who you are, with who you are meant to be.
The IT Factor Starts Within
I believe that anyone can have the “IT Factor.” It’s not magic, and it’s certainly not luck. It’s something you build by connecting your physical, mental, and relational self. The third pillar of intentional transformation—relational self—is where your confidence, presence, authenticity, and influence converge.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about perfection. It’s about ownership. When you know who you are and embrace your imperfections, your leadership becomes more magnetic, human, and trustworthy. As I often share with clients, “Sometimes being IMperfect is more perfect—because you are being your best, authentic self.”
Here’s how self-aware leaders lead from the inside out—and transform teams in the process:
1. Authenticity Is Your Leadership Superpower
Authenticity means aligning your behavior with your values. When you’re honest about your strengths, your areas for growth, and your emotions, you create psychological safety for your teams. This fosters innovation, collaboration, and a culture of high performance.
Quick distinction: Authenticity is living your truth. Vulnerability is sharing it with those who’ve earned your trust.
2. Clarity Builds Confidence and Trust
Confusion is the enemy of confidence. When leaders communicate clearly—whether in expectations, feedback, or vision—they cultivate influence. Learn to listen deeply, respond thoughtfully, and articulate with intention.
Clarity isn’t about overexplaining. It's about focusing on what truly matters and leaving no space for confusion or misinterpretation.
3. Feedback Is Fuel, Not Failure
Self-aware leaders embrace feedback as a tool for growth. When you model reflection and coachability, your team follows suit. They naturally mirror your behaviors. This ripple effect drives performance, accountability, and continual improvement at every level of the organization.
4. Presence Starts with Inner Alignment
What executive presence really comes down to is congruence—when your inner world aligns with your outer expression. That’s when people lean in. That’s when you become a force for influence. And that’s when your team feels compelled to follow. This is where the “IT Factor” lives. And it starts with your willingness to do the inner work.
5. EQ Is a Trust Multiplier
As leadership becomes more human-centric, leaders with high EQ gain a distinct edge. They respond rather than react. They empathize without enabling. And they build cultures where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to contribute at their highest level.
As theorist Howard Gardner once said, “Your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them, and how to work cooperatively with them.”
The Bottom Line:
Self-awareness isn’t a buzzword—it’s a business imperative. And for leaders who want to drive meaningful transformation, developing your emotional intelligence and owning your presence is the first step.

How AI + IT (Intentional Transformation) = The IT Factor
Today, AI is more than just a buzzword. It is a game-changer! But this is true for any new technology that enters the world—especially one as powerful as AI.
Disclaimer: Some of the resources mentioned in this post are ones I haven’t personally used but have researched thoroughly or been recommended by trusted peers.
Today, AI is more than just a buzzword. It is a game-changer! But this is true for any new technology that enters the world—especially one as powerful as AI.
In the early 1970s when personal computers were introduced initial fears were that they were too complex, unnecessary for everyday life, and a threat to jobs. And yet, our lives have transformed because PCs empowered us and laid the foundation for the digital revolution. The 1990s brought widespread use of the internet with valid concerns of privacy, addiction, misinformation, and social isolation. With global collaboration and access to knowledge, where would any of us be without our smartphones? By putting computing power, education, and connectivity in the palms of billions of peoples hands, this technology has forever changed how we live our lives.
It's normal to feel a mix of curiosity and quite possibly even fear when it comes to what will happen—is happening—with AI. I know I’ve been a bit intimidated by it myself! There may be a sense of losing control, of machines replacing humans and of values being compromised. All of these are valid concerns, and in some cases, a fact. But like any tool, AI reflects the intention of the person using it. In the hands of someone committed to growth, it can become a catalyst—not a replacement—for transformation. Nothing will ever replace true human connection—something that I believe we all crave as a part of our human nature.
So what if, instead of resisting AI out of fear, we embraced this new chapter of advancement with intention? What if we saw it not as a threat, but as a tool that can amplify and help us reach our goals, an accelerant to our next level of leadership when used mindfully? Whether you're leading a team, a boardroom, or your own life, here’s a truth: to achieve your IT Factor—more presence, confidence, authenticity and influence—requires Intentional Transformation (IT). Intentional Transformation is a deliberate connection of your physical, mental and relational self and when that alignment happens, an inner energy radiates outward. By wisely adding in some of the AI tools that are available, there is an opportunity to make even more powerful changes in your life.
Here’s how to harness AI to unlock the IT Factor.
1. PHYSICAL: The Foundation of Energy and Presence
Your body is the first thing people notice, and the last thing they forget. It sets the foundation for your IT Factor. 65% of communication is non-verbal. But this is not just about the right posture or wearing the right outfit, it’s about the energy you create and project: confident or hesitant, authentic or insincere. It’s also about how you take care of your physical body. Daily movement is more than just exercise. It can boost clarity, brain function, and help you unlock the pathways where you might be stuck. When you're physically aligned, your presence becomes magnetic.
AI-powered tools for physical alignment:
Oura Ring, WHOOP, or AI fitness apps can help you monitor your energy, sleep, and recovery. These insights help you optimize wellness and build consistent magnetic presence.
2. MENTAL: The Inner GPS of Growth and Belief
A growth mindset is essential. It’s not enough to want to have more confidence, or to want to have more presence, you have to believe it, embody it, and reinforce it daily. Belief without a strategy is just noise. Your inner dialogue must be managed with intention. Our brains cycle through 50,000 thoughts a day. And guess what? 95% of them are the same ones on repeat. That inner dialogue shapes your reality. If your self-talk is negative, if you’re constantly telling yourself, “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never be ready”—those beliefs get hardwired into action.
Ask daily:
“What am I believing right now? Is it really true or a limiting belief?
Is it moving me forward or holding me back?”
AI-powered tools for mindset alignment:
Reflectly or ChatGPT for daily journaling prompts: These tools help reframe self-talk and disrupt limiting patterns.
3. RELATIONAL: The Mirror of Self-Awareness
The relationship you have with yourself influences every other relationship in your life. You can’t expect to lead others if you are not aware of your own strengths and weaknesses or don’t live out your core values. Your values, emotional intelligence—combined with self-awareness and authenticity—is your superpower. Authentic leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s knowing your truth and communicating it clearly which results in strengthening relationships, managing conflict, and inspiring collaboration.
AI tools for relational intelligence:
Crystal uses AI to analyze LinkedIn profiles and improve interpersonal communication based on personality insights. People I know who have experimented with Crystal have found it helpful in team dynamics and client prep.*
The Integration: AI as an Ally in Leadership
AI won’t transform you, but AI tools can accelerate your intentional transformation and assist in aligning your physical, mental, and relational self, unlocking your IT Factor—all leading to more confidence, presence, authenticity and influence.

Interested in Taking Yourself or Your Executive Team to the Next Level?
Brunner Communications assists high-profile individuals and organizations in sharpening and developing top level business communication, executive presence, and public speaking skills. Our passionate team provides one-on-one executive business coaching, and runs specialized business workshops. Through customized training, clients learn the necessary skills to become great communicators and build a marketable reputation.
How Communication Shapes Influence and Impact
… Whether you're pitching to a client, presenting to a board, or leading a team, your ability to clearly and confidently deliver a message directly shapes your influence, leadership credibility, and the results you achieve…
In today's fast-paced, digital-first world, effective communication isn't optional—it's essential. Whether you're pitching to a client, presenting to a board, or leading a team, your ability to clearly and confidently deliver a message directly shapes your influence, leadership credibility, and the results you achieve.
As an executive communications coach, I’ve seen firsthand that the most successful leaders and professionals all have one thing in common: they intentionally craft their communication to build trust, inspire action, and drive change.
If you want to increase your influence and maximize your impact, here’s how to do it with precision:
1. Master Clear, Consistent, and Transparent Communication
Trust is the currency of influence. To earn it, your communication must be:
Clear: Avoid jargon, ambiguity, and over-complication. Focus on delivering one key idea at a time.
Consistent: Align your words and actions across every platform—whether in a meeting, in writing, or on social media.
Transparent: Authenticity builds loyalty. When you communicate openly, even about challenges, you create deeper connection and respect.
Leaders who prioritize clarity and consistency are seen as more credible, reliable, and influential.
Pro Tip: Before any major communication (presentation, email, meeting), ask yourself: "What is the one feeling I want my audience to walk away with?" Let this guide your language and structure.
2. Use Storytelling as a Strategic Advantage
Storytelling isn't just a "nice to have"—it’s a high-impact communication tool. Research shows that people are more likely to remember a story than a list of facts.
To leverage storytelling for influence:
Share relevant personal experiences that align with your message.
Create a narrative arc—start with a relatable challenge, build to a turning point, and end with a clear resolution or takeaway.
Evoke emotion: People act when they feel something. Logic informs, but emotion moves people to decision.
Authentic, well-placed stories humanize your leadership and make your message unforgettable.
Pro Tip: Use the “Hero’s Journey” format for professional storytelling: Situation → Struggle → Solution → Success. Make your audience see themselves in your journey.
3. Listen as Intentionally as You Speak
True communication is a two-way street. Active listening is a critical but often overlooked leadership skill that directly impacts your ability to influence and connect.
To listen with influence:
Give your full attention—no distractions.
Reflect back what you hear to show understanding.
Ask clarifying questions to deepen the dialogue.
When people feel truly heard, they are more motivated, more loyal, and more likely to take action aligned with your vision.
Pro Tip: In your next conversation, aim for a 70/30 rule: listen 70% of the time, speak only 30%. You'll be amazed at the trust and insight you build.
4. Align Your Communication with Your Presence
Words matter—but so does how you deliver them. Your presence, tone, and non-verbal cues can either reinforce or undermine your message.
Key elements of powerful presence include:
Confident posture and body language
Steady, conversational tone
Eye contact that builds trust
Pauses that allow your message to land
When communication and presence are aligned, you command greater respect and significantly boost your influence.
Pro Tip: Record yourself practicing a key message or presentation. Watch with the sound off first to evaluate your body language alone. Then watch again with sound. You’ll quickly identify where alignment can improve.
Bottom Line:
Strong communication skills aren’t just about speaking well; they are the foundation of leadership, trust, and transformation. Every word, every story, every listening moment either strengthens or weakens your influence.
If you're ready to elevate your communication—and your impact—let’s work together. Customized coaching can help you develop the skills to connect, engage, and lead with exceptional confidence and clarity.

Unlocking Executive Presence: A CEO’s Journey to Success
Success isn’t just about experience—it’s about how you present it.
Success isn’t just about experience—it’s about how you present it. Many high-performing professionals reach a point where technical expertise alone isn’t enough to propel them forward. They need to refine their executive presence, master impactful communication, and tell a compelling leadership story.
That’s exactly where one of my clients found himself in 2023. Despite a nearly 30-year career filled with promotions and leadership roles, he wanted to elevate his presence, sharpen his messaging, and prepare for what could be the biggest opportunity of his career. While there was a possibility that he could be in the running for CEO, nothing was certain—until he took intentional steps to shape his narrative and deliver it with confidence.
The Challenge: Crafting a Leadership Story That Stands Out
With a background in mathematics and finance, my client’s career had evolved far beyond his formal education. His leadership experience in tech, governance, and public service made him a dynamic candidate, but the challenge was articulating that in a way that connected with not only decision-makers, but the rest of the firm as well. His story couldn’t be just a checklist of accomplishments—it needed to convey his leadership philosophy, his impact, and his vision for the company’s future.
The Strategy: Clarity, Confidence & Connection
Over nine months, we worked together to:
✔️ Clarify His Leadership Narrative – Identifying themes in his career that showcased his problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and vision.
✔️ Strengthen His Executive Presence – Refining his delivery using my 4 C’s Framework: Confidence, Content, Clarity, and Conversational Delivery.
✔️ Master High-Stakes Communication – Using video coaching, live rehearsals, and structured feedback to ensure his message was compelling and effortless.
The Breakthrough Moment
When the moment arrived for him to present his vision to the company’s decision-makers, he wasn’t just prepared—he was confident. He spoke with clarity, authenticity, and a commanding presence that left a lasting impact. A few weeks later, during one of our coaching sessions, he got the call: He had been named CEO.
The Takeaway: Are You Ready for Your Next Level?
This transformation wasn’t just about a promotion—it was about owning his story, his leadership, and his potential. If you’re a high-level professional eyeing your next big move, ask yourself:
Are you effectively communicating your value and leadership vision?
Does your presence inspire confidence in those around you?
Are you prepared to step into your next role with clarity and conviction?
If you’re ready to refine your executive presence, master high-stakes communication, and position yourself for career-defining opportunities, let’s work together. Your next chapter is waiting—let’s make sure you’re ready to own it.

The Power of Daily Habits: Small Shifts That Lead to Big Success
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that success doesn’t come from massive, overnight changes—it comes from the small, consistent actions we take every single day.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that success doesn’t come from massive, overnight changes—it comes from the small, consistent actions we take every single day. The way you start your morning, the habits you stick to, and the routines you build all add up to shape the way you show up in your life and career.
For me, there are five habits I’ve been doing almost every single day for decades:
1️⃣ Make my bed
2️⃣ Read something inspiring
3️⃣ Journal
4️⃣ Move my body
5️⃣ Eat breakfast
These may seem simple, but they are intentional. They create a foundation that helps me feel grounded, clear-headed, and ready to take on the day. If you’re looking to be more productive, focused, and in control of your time, these small shifts might just make all the difference.
1. Make Your Bed: Win the Day Before It Even Starts
This might sound basic, but hear me out. There’s something about making your bed that signals to your brain: I’ve accomplished something already. It creates momentum. It’s a small act of discipline that sets the tone for everything else. Admiral William McRaven famously said that making your bed every morning means you’ve already checked off the first task of the day. I couldn’t agree more. Plus, climbing into a neatly made bed at night? It’s a small but meaningful reward.
2. Read Something That Fuels Your Mind
What we consume—whether it’s news, books, or social media—shapes our thoughts and perspective. Every morning, I make it a point to read something inspiring. Sometimes it’s a quote, a chapter from a book, or a short article. Whatever it is, I want to start my day with a mindset of possibility, not limitation. Try swapping mindless scrolling for five minutes of reading something uplifting. It might just shift the way you approach your entire day.
3. Journal: Get Your Thoughts Out of Your Head
Journaling has been a game-changer for me. It helps me process my thoughts, reflect on my goals, and recognize patterns in my life. Some days I write for 30 minutes, other days it’s just a few sentences. But putting pen to paper is a way of clearing mental clutter and making space for clarity. If you’re new to journaling, start small. Write down one thing you’re grateful for or one thing you want to focus on for the day. You don’t have to write a novel—just get your thoughts down.
4. Move Your Body: Energy Creates Energy
I don’t exercise because I have to—I do it because I know how much better I feel when I move. Whether it’s a workout at the gym, a walk outside, or a quick stretch, physical movement isn’t just about staying in shape. It clears my mind, boosts my energy, and strengthens my discipline. And the best part? It doesn’t have to be an intense, hour-long workout. Just get moving. Your future self will thank you.
5. Eat Breakfast: Fuel Your Body for Success
I’ll admit, I’m not a huge breakfast person. But I know that when I start my day with something nutritious, I think more clearly, I have more energy, and I’m just on my game. Food is fuel—simple as that. Even if you’re someone who “forgets” to eat in the morning, consider grabbing a protein smoothie, some fruit, or anything that gives you lasting energy. Your body (and brain) need it.
These habits aren’t about perfection. Some days you won’t get to all of them, and that’s okay. What matters is consistency. When you commit to small, intentional actions every day, they stack up and transform your life.
So, what daily habits help you feel your best? If you’re looking for new ways to boost your focus, confidence, and productivity, start small. Pick one habit and make it yours. And if you’re ready to step up your game in a bigger way, let’s connect—I’d love to help you create the transformation you’re looking for.

Reinventing Yourself: Navigating Career Pivots with Purpose
…Reinvention isn’t about starting over—it’s about leveraging your existing experience, skills, and passions to create a fulfilling new chapter…
Embracing Career Change with Confidence
Career transitions are inevitable, whether by choice or circumstance. The thought of pivoting to a new role, industry, or even an entirely different career path can feel overwhelming. However, reinvention isn’t about starting over—it’s about leveraging your existing experience, skills, and passions to create a fulfilling new chapter. That’s why I call it re-creation.
Overcoming Fear and Embracing Growth
One of the biggest obstacles in navigating a career pivot is fear—the fear of the unknown, failure, or stepping away from a well-established identity. Yet, change is a natural and necessary part of professional growth. Rather than viewing a transition as an end, see it as an opportunity to evolve and redefine success on your terms.
Personal Story: Embracing Change
I like to say I’m in my fourth career chapter. I began as a high school music teacher before moving into retail for a few years. Then, I transitioned into a 28-year career in television before making my most recent pivot to become a keynote speaker, executive communications coach, and author. Was there fear involved? Absolutely. But each transition built upon my previous experiences, proving that no knowledge is ever wasted. As my grandmother, Dr. Dorothy Chacko, once said, “No knowledge is ever wasted.” That quote became the foundation of my book, Dare to Own You: Taking Your Authenticity and Dreams into Your Next Chapter, which Forbes called a “teaching memoir.”
Identifying Your Strengths and Passions
A successful career pivot starts with deep self-reflection. Consider these questions:
What are my core strengths and transferable skills?
What work excites me and aligns with my passions?
How can my past experiences shape my next move?
By gaining clarity on your strengths and values, you can align your career transition with a path that feels both purposeful and fulfilling.
Creating a Strategic Career Transition Plan
Shifting careers doesn’t happen overnight—it requires deliberate planning, networking, and skill development. Here’s how you can strategically approach your career pivot:
1. Expand Your Knowledge
Enroll in relevant courses, attend workshops, or obtain certifications to enhance your expertise.
Stay updated on industry trends through books, podcasts, and thought leaders.
2. Network with Purpose
Connect with professionals in your desired field through LinkedIn, networking events, or industry conferences.
Conduct informational interviews and seek mentorship to gain valuable insights and potential job leads.
3. Build Your Personal Brand
Optimize your LinkedIn profile to reflect your evolving career focus.
Revise your resume and cover letter to highlight transferable skills.
Develop a strong personal narrative about your career shift to confidently communicate your story in interviews and professional conversations.
4. Take Action
Start small—explore freelance projects, part-time roles, or volunteer opportunities to gain relevant experience.
Apply for roles that align with your new direction, even if they seem slightly outside your comfort zone.
Adapting and Staying Resilient
Career pivots are rarely linear, and setbacks are part of the process. The key to success is adaptability—learning from challenges, staying open to unexpected opportunities, and maintaining resilience in uncertain moments. Trust yourself and your ability to navigate change.
The Power of Purpose in Career Reinvention
At the core of any career pivot is purpose. Aligning your work with your passions and values leads to a career that is both meaningful and sustainable. Reinvention isn’t about abandoning your past, it’s about leveraging all you’ve learned to step into a brighter future.

Women Who Transformed Their Lives: Stories of Resilience and Impact
…From household names to personal inspirations, the lessons we learn from these women are powerful reminders that transformation is possible for anyone willing to embrace it…
History is shaped by women who defied limitations, redefined success, and paved the way for future generations. These stories of transformation aren’t just about breaking barriers—they’re about intentional transformation, resilience, and the ability to rewrite one’s narrative. From household names to personal inspirations, the lessons we learn from these women are powerful reminders that transformation is possible for anyone willing to embrace it.
Trailblazers Who Redefined Possibility
Some of the most influential women in history exemplify what it means to reinvent oneself with purpose. Eleanor Roosevelt redefined the role of First Lady, championing human rights and using her platform for social change. Maya Angelou transformed personal adversity into poetic brilliance, becoming one of the most celebrated voices in literature and activism. Barbara Walters shattered the glass ceiling in journalism, proving that women belong at the top of media and broadcasting.
These women didn’t simply achieve success—they embodied resilience and intentional transformation, continuously evolving to leave a lasting impact.
Modern Examples of Intentional Transformation
Transformation isn’t just about historical figures; it’s happening now. On my podcast, Live Your Best Life with Liz Brunner, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with extraordinary women who have redefined their paths through self-awareness and courage.
Bridgett Burrick Brown spent over two decades as a professional model but chose to walk away from an industry that dictated unrealistic beauty standards. She now empowers women to embrace individuality and redefine beauty from the inside out.
Jenna Banks overcame a traumatic upbringing and a near-fatal suicide attempt, turning her pain into power. Through self-love and resilience, she built a thriving business and now helps others embrace their worth and live fulfilling lives.
Nina Sossamon-Pogue confronted mental health struggles, including situational PTSD, and emerged stronger through connection, self-reflection, and purpose-driven action. Her story is a testament to the power of relationships and resilience in shaping our next chapters.
Personal Stories That Inspire Generations
Beyond public figures, some of the most inspiring transformations come from the women closest to us. My mother and grandmothers weren’t widely recognized, but their strength, determination, and leadership had a profound impact on my life and the lives of many others.
Mary Chacko Russell, my mother, challenged societal norms as a social worker while navigating the complexities of being biracial in a time of deep-seated prejudice. She broke through barriers with unwavering determination, proving that personal growth and perseverance can drive meaningful change.
Dr. Dorothy Dunning Chacko, my maternal grandmother, defied the odds as one of the first female medical residents at New York’s Metropolitan Hospital. She went on to establish the first leprosy colony in India, dedicating her career to humanitarian work and medical advancements.
Beatrice Price Russell, “Grammie,” pursued higher education when few women were given the opportunity. She used her voice to champion diversity and empowerment, creating an international community that embraced cultural exchange and inclusion.
What We Can Learn from Their Journeys
The common thread among these women is intentional transformation—the deliberate choice to grow, evolve, and create impact. Whether through career shifts, personal reinvention, or social change, their stories highlight key takeaways:
Self-awareness is the foundation of transformation—understanding your values, strengths, and purpose is the first step.
Resilience isn’t about avoiding failure—it’s about rising after setbacks. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Connection fuels change. Relationships, mentorship, and community support are essential for personal and professional evolution.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s not just remember the women who shaped history—let’s apply their lessons to shape our own futures. Who are the women who have inspired your transformation?

How To Master Presence and Confidence in High-Stakes Moments
The good news: presence and confidence are skills that can be cultivated, especially in high-stakes moments where they matter most.
Have you ever watched someone walk into a room and instantly command attention? They exude confidence, authenticity, and an undeniable presence. That is the "IT Factor"—a quality that makes someone stand out and leave a lasting impression. But is this something you’re simply born with, or can it be developed? The good news: presence and confidence are skills that can be cultivated, especially in high-stakes moments where they matter most.
Mastering presence and confidence is not about faking it until you make it. It’s about intentional transformation—aligning your physical, mental, and relational self to show up as your most powerful and authentic version. Let’s explore how you can harness these elements to elevate your presence and confidence in critical moments.
1. Cultivate Your Physical Presence
Your body language, posture, and even the energy you bring into a space set the foundation for how others perceive you. Studies show that nonverbal communication accounts for over 65% of how we are perceived, often before we even say a word. Here’s how to refine your physical presence:
Posture & Movement: Stand tall, keep your shoulders back, and move with purpose. Avoid crossing your arms, which can appear closed off.
Eye Contact: Engage with others through direct but natural eye contact—it signals confidence and attentiveness.
Facial Expressions: A genuine smile can instantly make you appear more approachable and self-assured.
Dress with Intention: What you wear should align with the environment and message you want to convey. Your attire should make you feel confident and empowered.
Energy Management: Physical movement—whether through exercise, deep breathing, or stretching—can regulate stress, sharpen focus, and enhance your overall presence.
2. Strengthen Your Mental Mindset
Confidence begins in the mind. If you don’t believe in yourself, it’s hard to project assurance to others. In high-stakes situations, your mindset can be the deciding factor between success and self-doubt. Here’s how to strengthen it:
Reframe Negative Thoughts: The mind can produce thousands of thoughts per day—many of them repetitive and self-critical. Start replacing limiting beliefs with empowering ones.
Visualization: Imagine yourself succeeding in your high-stakes moment. Studies show that mental rehearsal can improve actual performance.
Preparation is Key: Confidence is built through preparation. Whether it’s a keynote, a pitch, or a crucial conversation, practicing your content and delivery will increase your self-assurance.
Embrace the Pause: When under pressure, silence can be powerful. Take a breath, collect your thoughts, and respond with intention rather than reacting impulsively.
3. Enhance Your Relational Impact
True presence isn’t just about how you carry yourself—it’s about how you connect with others. Your ability to engage, communicate, and build relationships is essential to mastering presence and confidence, even in virtual situations.
Active Listening: Presence isn’t just about being seen; it’s about making others feel heard. Listen fully before responding.
Authenticity is Your Superpower: People are drawn to real, honest interactions. Avoid trying to imitate someone else’s style—own yours.
Storytelling: The best communicators weave compelling narratives that create emotional connections. Sharpen your storytelling skills to captivate your audience.
Manage Nervous Energy: Instead of suppressing nerves, channel them into enthusiasm and passion for your message.
Step Into Your Power
Mastering presence and confidence in high-stakes moments is not about perfection—it’s about being fully engaged, prepared, and authentic. By aligning your physical, mental, and relational self, you unlock the ability to lead with impact, inspire trust, and seize opportunities with unwavering confidence.
So, the next time you step onto a stage, walk into a boardroom, or engage in a high-stakes conversation, ask yourself: Am I showing up as my most confident and intentional self? The time is now to refine your presence, elevate your confidence, and embrace your full potential.

“Unlocking Your IT Factor:” The Power of Intentional Transformation
Your IT Factor is within you. It’s a powerful blend of confidence, authenticity, and presence that, when intentionally cultivated, can elevate your success, influence, and personal growth.
We’ve all heard about the “IT Factor”—that magnetic quality that makes some people stand out in leadership, business, and life. But is it an exclusive trait, reserved only for a select few? Absolutely not. Your IT Factor is within you. It’s a powerful blend of confidence, authenticity, and presence that, when intentionally cultivated, can elevate your success, influence, and personal growth.
Transformation Is a Choice, Not a Coincidence
Many people believe they need to wait for the right moment to transform, but the truth is: transformation starts the moment you decide to take control of your journey. The IT Factor isn’t about luck or genetics—it’s about commitment, mindset, and taking consistent action toward refining your natural strengths.
By definition, transformation is the process of improving or becoming something greater. When you add intentionality—a deliberate and purpose-driven approach—you create a roadmap for elevating yourself to the next level in leadership, communication, and influence.
How to Unlock and Harness Your IT Factor
If you’re ready to take action, here are four key principles to guide your intentional transformation and cultivate your IT Factor:
1. Develop a Mindset of Growth & Resilience
Your mindset shapes your reality. If you believe in your ability to transform, you create space for it to happen. Your thoughts fuel your actions, and your actions determine your results. Start by reframing setbacks as learning experiences and challenges as opportunities to grow.
2. Clarify Your Vision & Act As If
What does the next-level version of you look like? Write it down. Visualize it. Studies show that your brain can’t distinguish between imagination and reality—so when you “act as if” your transformation is already happening, you’re programming yourself for success.
3. Commit to Intentional Daily Habits
Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process of consistent, purposeful action. Some days will feel like leaps forward; others may feel like setbacks. The key is to keep going. Small, intentional habits—whether it’s refining your communication skills, practicing executive presence, or building confidence—compound over time to create massive change.
4. Embrace Discomfort & Take Bold Action
Growth happens outside your comfort zone. The most successful leaders and communicators lean into discomfort—whether it’s taking risks, making bold decisions, or putting themselves in challenging situations. Fear and self-doubt are natural, but they don’t have to hold you back.
Your IT Factor Is Waiting—Are You Ready?
Intentional transformation isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. When you step into your IT Factor, you attract new opportunities, command presence, and gain unshakable confidence. More importantly, you align with your highest potential, breaking free from limiting beliefs and unlocking the success you’ve been striving for.
As I mentioned in a recent keynote, James Conant famously said, “Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.”
The time is now to step forward, embrace change, and allow your IT Factor to shine.

Why Storytelling Is the Ultimate Leadership Skill You Need in 2025
High-performing professionals have the drive, the strategy, and the expertise but how often are we taught to lean into storytelling to connect with our audience?
High-performing professionals have the drive, the strategy, and the expertise but how often are we taught to lean into storytelling to connect with our audience? Whether it’s leading a team, pitching to stakeholders, or delivering a keynote, the ability to tell a compelling story could be the missing link that takes communication—and leadership—to the next level.
Storytelling isn’t just about entertaining people. It’s a bridge to connection. Your story has the power to inspire action, build trust, and make you unforgettable. It’s also an invitation for others to see your authentic self, which fosters trust and empathy. And in 2025, when authenticity and relatability are more important than ever, mastering this skill is a must.
Why Your Story Matters
Your story is more than a timeline of events—it’s a window into who you are, what you stand for and how you got to where you are. Sharing it helps you to:
Foster Self-Awareness: Reflecting on your experiences reveals patterns, lessons, and growth. As you reflect on the chapters of your life, you gain clarity about who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re headed. No knowledge is ever wasted and there is always something to be gleaned from an experience, regardless of whether or not it could be considered positive or negative.
Boosts Your Confidence: Owning and sharing your story reminds you of the challenges you’ve overcome—and why you’re stronger because of them. It’s empowering! Ever reworked your resume and thought, “I’ve done a lot more than I thought!” The same practice applies here. When we take inventory of our achievements, we can quiet the imposter syndrome that may be at play and holding us back or hindering our success.
Captivate Your Audience: People don’t connect with slides or stats—they connect with stories that make them feel something. They want to know that what they’re yearning for is achievable and they need proof. Your successes, and even your failures, create a relatable roadmap for others navigating similar paths.
How Storytelling Elevates Your Leadership
Think about the best leaders or speakers you’ve encountered. Chances are, they didn’t just talk at you—they shared stories that stuck with you. Why? Because storytelling:
Simplifies complex ideas and makes them relatable.
Creates emotional connections that inspire action.
Shows vulnerability and authenticity, which builds trust.
In other words, storytelling can turn good leaders into great ones by revealing the humanness of our connected journeys.
5 Simple Steps to Start Using Storytelling in Your Leadership
Not sure how to tap into your storytelling superpower? Here’s where to begin:
Reflect on Key Moments: What experiences have shaped who you are today? How did they make you feel?
Share the Struggles, Not Just the Wins: People connect with the journey, not just the destination. Highlighting the low points makes the high points even sweeter.
Know Your Audience: Tailor your story to their needs and experiences to make it resonate. You might not know exactly how each person is feeling but we can all relate to themes of “I didn’t know if I could but here I am.”
Keep It Simple: Every great story has a beginning, middle, and end. Focus on clarity and flow. Make sure the details are critical to your story and don’t distract from your main message.
Practice Makes Perfect: Run your story by a mentor or coach. Small tweaks can make a big impact, help you identify blindspots and ensure your story is tailored for your audience.
Why Storytelling Will Be a Game-Changer in 2025
This year, leaders who thrive will be the ones who can connect deeply with their teams and audiences. Storytelling helps you stand out in a noisy world by humanizing your message and making it memorable.
Whether you're presenting to a room of executives or inspiring your team at the next meeting, storytelling will help you communicate with purpose and authenticity.
Let’s Build Your Story Together
I believe everyone has a story worth sharing—and it’s time to share yours. Let’s work together to craft a narrative that inspires, connects, and positions you as the leader you’re meant to be.

Finding Your Balance (Without Losing Your Edge)
Here’s the truth: living in overdrive isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a shortcut to burnout. The good news? Balance doesn’t mean doing less; it means doing things differently.
Let’s have an honest moment: when you’re a high-achiever, the word “balance” can feel like a joke. Between the meetings, deadlines, and life’s constant demands, balance often gets left behind in the hustle.
But here’s the truth: living in overdrive isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a shortcut to burnout. The good news? Balance doesn’t mean doing less; it means doing things differently. So, let’s dig into some creative, real-life strategies to bring more balance into your life without losing your edge.
1. Balance Means What You Say It Means
Forget the Instagram-perfect life. Your balance doesn’t have to look like yoga retreats and color-coded calendars (unless you’re into that!). Ask yourself:
What feels “off” right now?
What would make you feel more aligned and energized?
Maybe it’s leaving work on time to catch your kid’s soccer game or saying “no” to that third meeting of the day. Balance starts when you define it for you.
2. The Power of a Short List
Reminder: You can’t do it all, and trying to will drive you straight into the ground. Here’s the trick: make a list of three priorities every day. Just three.
At work: What’s the one thing that will move the needle?
At home: What will make you feel grounded today?
Knock those out first, and give yourself permission to let the rest wait. Spoiler alert: it will.
3. Mini Breaks = Major Wins
Think balance requires an epic vacation? Nope. A 5-minute pause can work wonders.
Step outside and let the sun hit your face.
Try a little box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4).
Blast your favorite song and dance like nobody’s watching.
These micro-moments add up to big energy shifts. Trust me, your brain will thank you.
4. Boundaries Are the Real Flex
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Set boundaries to protect your energy—and stick to them.
At work: Set a hard stop on your day. The emails can wait.
With yourself: Say “no” to things that drain you, even if FOMO tries to creep in.
Every time you protect your time, you’re saying “yes” to what really matters.
5. Fuel Your Ambition
Think of your body as the engine for your ambition. Are you giving it what it needs?
Move your body daily, even if it’s a walk to grab your coffee.
Eat food that fuels you, not food that makes you crash. (Yes, I’m looking at you, vending machine snacks.)
Drink your water. Hydration = high performance.
6. Unplug, Even for a Little While
Let’s face it—our phones are both a blessing and a curse. Give yourself a break from the screen.
Set “no phone” hours during your day.
Try an analog activity: read a book, cook a meal, or just sit with your thoughts.
You might be surprised at how much clearer and calmer you feel.
7. Gratitude Changes Everything
Balance isn’t just about what you do—it’s also about how you think.
Start your day by listing three things you’re grateful for.
End it by celebrating one win, big or small.
Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already amazing.
Progress Over Perfection
Here’s the thing: balance isn’t a box you check off. It’s a practice—a way of showing up for yourself in the chaos. Some days will be smooth; others will be a hot mess. That’s okay. The question isn’t, “How do I get it all right?” It’s, “What’s one thing I can do today to feel a little more grounded?”
So, what’s your move? Share it with me—I’d love to hear how you’re creating your own version of balance.

What Snoop Dogg and I Have in Common: The Power of Preparation

When you think about Snoop Dogg, the words “keynote speaker” or “executive professional” might not immediately come to mind. But as surprising as it sounds, Snoop and I have something major in common: our belief in the Power of Preparation.
During a coaching session on NBC’s “The Voice”, Snoop shared wisdom with one of his team members, introducing them to the “5 P’s”: “Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance”—a concept originally coined by James Baker, President George H. W. Bush’s former Chief of Staff. This principle resonates deeply with me and applies to so much more than music or public speaking—it’s a game-changer for high-performing professionals across every field. Here’s why preparation isn’t just important—it’s the key to success:
Preparation is More Powerful than Perfection
Too often, we chase perfection and fall short. But perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. And preparation? That’s the ultimate tool for progress. Studies show that 80% of success comes from preparation, whether you're crafting a presentation, delivering a keynote, or pitching to a new client. Why? Because preparation builds confidence, reduces stress, and equips you to handle unexpected challenges. It’s about doing the work upfront so you can show up as your best self when it matters most.
How to Practice the 5 P’s for Success
So, how can you implement the “5 P’s” in your life and career? Here’s a roadmap:
Set Realistic Goals: Break big goals into smaller, actionable steps. Focus on what will move the needle most and tackle those first.
Develop Positive Habits: Consistency is key. Identify your top priorities daily, and consider tackling the hardest tasks when your energy is at its peak. Save simpler tasks for later.
Gather Your Resources: Make sure you have everything you need—tools, information, and support—before diving into a project. This prevents unnecessary setbacks.
Practice, Practice, Practice: Whether you’re preparing for a pitch, presentation, or performance, practice until it feels second nature. Use methods like the “Brunner Method for Practicing,” which involves learning your content deeply and rehearsing for a specific audience.
Mentally Rehearse and Visualize Success: Just as verbal practice is critical, mental rehearsal is equally powerful. Visualization boosts performance: studies reveal that mental imagery can improve confidence and sharpen focus.
How to Practice the 5 P’s for Success
When I deliver keynotes, preparation begins weeks before I step on stage. I research the audience, anticipate potential questions, and mentally rehearse different scenarios. This process allows me to show up fully prepared, not just to deliver my message but to engage and be prepared for the unexpected. The same principle applies to professionals in any field. Whether you’re negotiating a deal, leading a team meeting, or launching a new initiative, preparation gives you the edge you need to succeed.
Why Preparation Matters More Now Than Ever
In a world of increasing complexity and constant change, preparation has become a non-negotiable. Leaders are expected to pivot quickly, adapt to uncertainty, and deliver results under pressure. By mastering the “5 P’s,” you not only position yourself for success—you also inspire confidence in those around you.
The Takeaway
Snoop Dogg’s “5 P’s” might seem like simple advice, but their impact is profound: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. Whether you're an artist, a keynote speaker, or a high-performing professional, this principle sets you up to win in work and in life.
So, the next time you face a big challenge, remember this: preparation is your secret weapon. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up ready to give your best, no matter what comes your way. And as Snoop and I both know, when you prepare with intention, the results speak for themselves.
Are you ready to practice the “5 P’s” and unlock your next level of success?

The Power of Recognition: Why Every Leader Needs to Make it a Priority
… Whether they’re a full-time employee or a part-timer, everyone wants to feel seen, heard, and valued for their contributions.…
Want to know the single most effective thing you can do to motivate your team? Recognition. Whether they’re a full-time employee or a part-timer, everyone wants to feel seen, heard, and valued for their contributions. And if you’re looking to boost morale and drive performance, recognition can make all the difference.
According to Zippia, “80% of employees would work harder if they felt appreciated, but almost 29% report they haven’t been recognized in more than a year—if at all.” For leaders, this statistic is a call to action. Recognition isn’t just a “nice-to-have” perk; it’s a powerful motivator that shapes culture, strengthens team bonds, and keeps people engaged.
Recognition vs. Appreciation: Understanding the Difference
While recognition and appreciation are both important, it’s helpful to understand the slight distinction between them.
Appreciation focuses on an employee’s intrinsic value, like giving perks or rewards as a thank-you for being part of the team.
Recognition is more directly connected to work achievements, highlighting accomplishments, skills, or contributions.
Both are key to a positive workplace culture, but recognition has a particularly motivating effect. Unlike one-off bonuses or holiday gifts, regular, personalized recognition fuels long-term engagement, shows people their work matters, and encourages consistent performance.
Why Money Isn’t Enough
Sure, bonuses and perks are nice, and who doesn’t love a little extra cash? But while monetary rewards have their place, they aren’t a long-term motivator. Studies show that what truly sustains engagement is feeling valued and connected. And the best way to cultivate that is through consistent, thoughtful recognition.
Making Recognition Meaningful: Tips for Leaders
Recognition needs to be more than just a pat on the back. To have a lasting impact, it should be timely, specific, and personal. Here’s how you can make it a meaningful part of your leadership style:
Acknowledge Achievements Regularly
Celebrate Milestones: Recognize both big and small achievements during team meetings. Share the accomplishment, why it matters, and how it positively impacts the team or organization.
Write Personal Notes: A handwritten note recognizing someone’s hard work can leave a lasting impression. Make it specific—acknowledge a project well done or a particular quality you admire.
Highlight Achievements on Company Platforms: If appropriate, feature employee successes on internal newsletters, company emails, or social media. Public recognition builds confidence and a sense of pride.
Send a Video Message: For a unique touch, record a short video acknowledging someone’s contributions. It’s more personal than an email and shows genuine effort and appreciation.
Celebrate Personal Milestones
Recognize work anniversaries, birthdays, or other personal milestones with a small gift or card. It shows you see employees as individuals, not just team members.
Flexible Rewards and Perks
Offer Flexible Hours: Sometimes, an afternoon off or the freedom to adjust hours is worth more than cash. Consider a bonus day off as a reward for consistent performance or going above and beyond.
Add a Vacation Day: Giving an extra vacation day can be one of the most appreciated gestures. It’s a simple but meaningful way to thank someone for their hard work.
Invest in Their Growth
Development Opportunities: Support employees’ professional growth by providing access to courses, certifications, or industry conferences. Development is not just an investment in their career but also a sign that you believe in their potential.
Personal Learning Funds: Offer a stipend toward one class or workshop of their choice. This not only benefits them but can bring new skills and knowledge back to the team.
Create a Gratitude Board
Encourage peer-to-peer recognition by creating a physical or virtual gratitude board where team members can leave anonymous or signed notes of appreciation for each other. This builds a culture of mutual respect and appreciation.
Recognition Is About Connection
Ultimately, recognition is about more than just saying “thank you.” It’s about creating a culture where people feel connected, valued, and inspired. Tailoring recognition to each individual’s personality and preferences shows them you genuinely value them as an essential part of the team. And as a leader, your attention to these details can foster a supportive, committed, and engaged workplace.
Ready to Boost Your Team’s Morale? Start Recognizing.
In the end, effective recognition isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about being consistent, intentional, and specific. Recognition shows people their work has meaning, and it builds trust and commitment. So, before your next team meeting or one-on-one, think about who on your team deserves to be acknowledged. Then, go ahead and give that well-deserved recognition. A simple thank-you can go a long way, but a thoughtful, timely recognition? That’s priceless.

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs: 5 Proven Strategies for Personal and Professional Growth
…They can undermine our confidence, strain our relationships, and diminish our overall well-being. And before we know it, they become a self-fulfilling prophecy…
Have you ever said any of these statements?
“I’m not smart enough!”
“I’m too old to make a change!”
I’ll never be able to do that!”
“I don’t have the right experience.”
“I’m not ready!”
If any of these sound familiar, you’ve encountered what are known as limiting beliefs. These are the internal narratives that are sometimes so deeply ingrained that we may not even be conscious of them. They potentially create invisible barriers to our growth, progress and ability to seize opportunities—both professionally and personally. We feel stuck, but we don’t know why, nor how to fix it.
The challenge is that these beliefs often feel so real that we start to treat them as facts. Yet, in reality, they’re just stories—stories based on assumptions, past experiences, or societal conditioning, not objective truth. They can undermine our confidence, strain our relationships, and diminish our overall well-being. And before we know it, they become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The impact of limiting beliefs is more profound than many realize. In fact, research from the National Science Foundation shows that we have between 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day, with 80% of those being negative, and up to 95% of them being repetitive. This means that for most people, limiting beliefs—whether we’re conscious of them or not—are playing a significant role in our daily decision-making, influencing everything from our careers to our relationships and overall well-being. But there are steps we can take to comfortably challenge these beliefs with compassion to move ourselves forward:
Step 1: Identify Your Limiting Beliefs
The first step to overcoming limiting beliefs is recognizing them. Notice any recurring thoughts or phrases that emerge, especially when you’re about to take a risk or try something new. I recommend keeping a journal to track these thoughts. Writing them down makes them tangible and easier to address. For years, I carried the belief that I wasn’t smart enough to run my own business. It wasn’t until I started questioning that belief that I was able to move forward, and now I’m proud to be celebrating more than a decade as CEO and Founder of my own company, Brunner Communications.
Step 2: Challenge Those Beliefs
Once you’ve identified a limiting belief, it’s time to challenge it. High achievers thrive on evidence, so ask yourself:
What concrete proof do I have that this belief is true?
Is there evidence to the contrary?
Often, these beliefs are rooted in outdated information or misconceptions. By challenging their validity, you begin to break down their power.
Step 3: Rewire Your Thinking
Changing the narrative takes time, but it’s essential for personal and professional growth. Techniques like visualization and affirmations are effective tools for reprogramming the mind. When practiced consistently, they can reshape your internal dialogue, making room for healthier, more empowering beliefs. So too is surrounding yourself with people who uplift and challenge you in meaningful ways, those who believe in your potential, even when you don’t. Sometimes, it’s also helpful to have the assistance of a professional therapist or life coach to work with you on this process.
Step 4: Take Incremental Action
Success comes through action. Start by setting small, achievable goals that directly challenge your limiting beliefs. With each success, you’ll build confidence and create a positive feedback loop. In my book Dare to Own You, I offer proven strategies for building self-assurance and self-confidence through these incremental wins. The key is consistency—small, deliberate steps forward will add up over time.
Step 5: Practice Patience and Self-Compassion
Lastly, recognize that dismantling limiting beliefs is a process. It requires patience, persistence, and, most importantly, self-compassion. High performers are often hard on themselves, but overcoming limiting beliefs calls for a balance of rigor and grace.
I encourage you to reflect on the limiting beliefs that may be affecting your growth. What are they, and how are you actively working to overcome them? Feel free to connect with me and share your journey. I would love to hear how you’re breaking through your barriers. Remember, you have the power to rewrite your story. You are capable. You are enough. And you are ready. The time to act is now.
